For example, a major airline implemented a multi-agent AI concierge (with specialized agents for flight search, booking, check-in, etc., all orchestrated together). By letting these agents share context with each other and call live backend services through MCP connectors, the airline was able to handle over 4 million passenger queries with 93% autonomous resolution, escalating only 7% to humans. Think of MCP as a universal plug-and-play socket for AI: any tool or agent that speaks the MCP interface can plug into the system and provide its data or services to the others. This differs from traditional APIs because it’s designed specifically for integration within an AI’s reasoning process. Instead of a human or separate app calling an API and feeding the result to an AI, with MCP the AI agent itself can call on a resource mid-thought. For example, an AI writing code can internally call a “database lookup” module to get actual data before it continues writing an answer – all governed by MCP.

Let’s clarify how this relates to Azure AI Foundry and Copilot Studio. Azure AI Foundry provides the robust backend for creating agents with advanced logic and custom models (often via code). Copilot Studio provides a user-friendly front-end to design conversational agents and workflows (often via low-code configuration). Historically, these might operate separately. MCP is the bridge that connects them: it allows an agent created in Foundry to be invoked by a Copilot Studio agent (or vice versa) as if it were just another tool or function. In fact, Microsoft has made this integration fairly seamless – Copilot Studio now supports importing agents from Foundry into Studio workflows. Under the hood, those imported agents communicate via open protocols like MCP or the related Agent-to-Agent (A2A) standard. The goal is to “smooth the transition between pro-code and low-code spaces” so that a solution architect can build a sophisticated agent in Foundry (say, a compliance checker that uses custom NLP models) and a business user can then drag-and-drop that agent into a Copilot Studio conversation flow as a skill.

All of this happens through a well-defined protocol layer that ensures context is passed reliably and that each agent remains within its guardrails (an agent will only use MCP to access what it’s allowed to – security and consent are enforced at the protocol level).

The Inventory agent returns, say, “Next shipment expected on June 15.” The chatbot then tells the customer, “The SmartWatch is expected back in stock by June 15. In essence, MCP allowed the support AI to think to itself: “I don’t know that, but I know who does – let me ask my inventory colleague.”

Often, the Studio agent has a pre-defined dialog flow (in Copilot Studio you can design Topics or use the Agent Flow designer to specify how the conversation proceeds). The MCP-fetched data might populate certain variables or trigger a particular path in that flow. For example, if the Foundry agent returns “Order 123 is delayed”, the Studio agent might follow a branch for apologizing to the customer and offering a discount. Because Copilot Studio provides an orchestration canvas, you can decide how to handle the data an external agent returns. And because Foundry agents can be quite sophisticated, you might even receive not just raw data but a recommendation or a formatted answer from the Foundry side. MCP is flexible in what can be passed – from simple text strings to complex JSON objects representing structured info.
  5. Security & Governance Checks: Throughout the above steps, enterprise-grade checks are in place. MCP calls can carry tokens proving the caller’s identity (e.g., the Studio agent’s service identity), and the receiving agent will verify it. Microsoft’s documentation emphasizes that calls travel through secure channels and content filters. For example, if an agent tries to request something outside its allowed scope, the MCP gateway will deny it. Additionally, because these interactions are logged (and in Azure AI Foundry you have monitoring and traceability), admins can audit which agent asked for what data, when, and how the data was used. This addresses a key concern in multi-agent systems: maintaining responsible AI practices and compliance.
