Lego’s AI iPhone Moment

EXCELLENT READ: The smart brick could be Lego’s iPhone moment, “we had to make the tech feel invisible”. What can we learn from this?

1. Amplify your mission… in this case, by realizing the fun… is in creating and playing-with-legos, not by moving to some second screen or a minecraft-like virtual experience. Amplify your mission, don’t distract from your mission. There is something immersive and tangible about playing-with-legos… don’t lose it, engage it.

2. Understand the economic model… in Lego’s case, “sell more bricks”. That happens by engaging the intellect and imagination in building, either as play (children) or as puzzle (adult). This is the first tech in a while that has made me say, “hmm” about what might now be possible.

3. Be warry of a let-down if the experience isn’t right… it’s clear that Lego has thought through a lot of parts of the experience, from charging, to intercommunication, to the practical “what’s it like”.

4. Test it… it’s clear they went through many, many play testing experiences and there was genuine excitement in the halls of Lego about this one. In some cases that doesn’t tell the whole story, but we’ll find out.

5. Disruption is a thing… but sometimes its realizing that what’s old is new. In this case, as a father, I want my kids to actually play with something real and engage their intellect. You might be surprised by how non-digital my household is. If Lego does this right, they keep what is great and add to it, not distract from it.

NOW… we’ll see how this works in practice, but I’m here to try it out.
